  • Make it stronger with muy (very) or bastante (quite): estoy MUY bien · estoy BASTANTE cansado
  • Join two ideas with y (and) or pero (but): estoy bien PERO estoy cansado
  • Say thank you and hand the question back: gracias, ¿y tú?
  • The h is SILENT: hola sounds like 'ola'

No he aprendido mucho, pero he aprendido algo. Y eso está bien para el primer día.

12. Preguntas de lectura

Answer in full sentences in English where possible.

  1. What is Leo doing today?
  2. What does the teacher say when he comes in?
  3. What does the class answer, and what does Leo think about it?
  4. Name the four words they learn for how you feel.
  5. Which other word do they learn, and why does Leo like it?
  6. What does Leo say to his partner?
  7. What does she answer, and why is it true?
  8. What does the teacher say about the letter h?
  9. What do they say at the end of the lesson?
  10. How does Leo sum up his first day?

13. Verdadero / Falso

Write V (verdadero) or F (falso) for each statement. If a statement is false, correct it in Spanish.

  1. Hoy es la primera clase de español de Leo.
  2. Toda la clase contesta «¡Fatal!».
  3. A Leo le gusta la palabra «fenomenal».
  4. La compañera de Leo dice que está fenomenal.
  5. En español la hache no se pronuncia.
  6. Leo dice que no ha aprendido nada.

18. Actividades de ampliación

  • Around the class (extends Activity 14): Greet five different people, ask how they are and answer. Use a different greeting each time — hola, buenos días, buenas tardes, ¿qué tal?, ¿cómo estás?
  • Stretch — speaking to an adult (extends Activity 3): The polite way to ask an adult is '¿Y usted?' instead of '¿Y tú?'. Write two exchanges, one with a friend and one with a teacher, and mark what changes.
  • Stretch — more feelings (extends Activity 6): Learn fenomenal, cansado and enfermo, and write three sentences using 'bastante' with each. Remember that cansado becomes cansada and enfermo becomes enferma for a girl.
  • Word detective (extends Activity 8): Listen to Micro Listening 2 again. Note one word or phrase you didn't already know, look it up, and use it in a sentence of your own.
  • Silent h hunt (extends Activity 18): Find five Spanish words beginning with h. Say each one aloud without the h and write down what it sounds like.
